Twenty years ago yesterday, our country experienced great grief as we endured an historic terrorist attack upon our nation. It has changed the course of many lives, and changed the course of our country’s focus for two decades.

Through countless lost lives, through post-traumatic stress, through heroic efforts, through thousands upon thousands who have since volunteered to serve, that day is a day that has marked our nation’s history.

It was surprising for us. It was shocking for us.

But our God is never taken by surprise. He knew of these events, and He didn’t forsake us during our time of distress. He faithfully cared for each one who called upon Him in faith.

It is twenty years later, and because of anniversary ceremonies, news stories, and social media posts, our minds have been stirred to remembrance. Tomorrow, our lives will continue on, many will allow this remembrance to fade into the background, while others will live their days out with constant reminders of the loss they have experienced, whether on that day or in subsequent days in efforts domestically or on foreign soil.

May the Lord help us to remember those who are broken and hurting from the pain of loss. And let us remember that there is a day coming when our God will make all things new. Our God will free the world from injustice, from tyranny, and from terror. The God we serve will rule the world in peace and justice.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

There are increasing concerns over people’s safety. Our world presents us with a variety of dangers, and yet, there is one danger that trumps the rest. Dwelling in opposition to God is the most perilous condition in which a person can reside. For in opposition to God, there is a definite end in physical death (which we all face), and a certainty of eternal judgment. Everyone lives in this danger of death, but God has provided a place of safety in Himself. Through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s wrath against our sin has been permanently abated, and He has provided in Himself a safe, eternal dwelling place. Have you run to the Lord for refuge? Jesus told us that those who come to God for refuge will not be turned away. Join us this Sunday as we worship the Lord in fellowship, song, study of God’s Word, and participation in the Lord’s Supper.

“The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. The church is made up of sinners who have been forgiven by the perfect sacrifice of the perfect Son of God. Jesus came to save all kinds of sinners, and in this salvation, His mercy and patience are on full display. With all of the troubles we face in this life, it can be easy to wonder why we suffer such challenges. Believers and unbelievers alike are confronted with illness, disease, and death. Why do our bodies hurt? Why is my soul troubled? God is working in us through these troubles to prepare us for a glorious future. Those who have been redeemed through the Lord Jesus Christ have tasted the goodness of the Lord. We have received a first installment of the glory that awaits us, and thus we patiently endure the difficulties of this life, because we are confident that full glory awaits us. We will never experience pain, sorrow, or turmoil again. Instead, we will experience the full, lasting joy and peace of our great God! Join us this Sunday, January 31, as we continue our study of the book of Romans!

Coronavirus Update 03.17.20 https://www.cornerstonechurchri.org/blog/post/coronavirus-update-031720 https://www.cornerstonechurchri.org/blog/post/coronavirus-update-031720#comments Tue, 17 Mar 2020 18:00:00 -0400 https://www.cornerstonechurchri.org/blog/post/coronavirus-update-031720

Dear Cornerstone family,

This timeframe we are experiencing is unique to us. Of course, it is not surprising to our Heavenly Father, for He knows and rules over all things (Rev. 1:8; Psalm 139:1-6; 145:13). We have been prepared for this type of thing by our reading, studying, and meditating upon the Word of God. We know that this life is filled with adversity, and that is not a bad thing (Rom. 8:18, 28-30; 2 Cor. 4:16-18). It is opportunities like this that demonstrate the genuineness of our faith (1 Pet. 1:6-7).

While we have been prepared theologically for this circumstance, most of us have not experienced this type of pandemic. None of us have seen anything close to this type of societal response to a disease. So, we are in uncharted territory. We are receiving guidance from the CDC and from our federal and local government. Some may think it is all ridiculous, and some may ignore the threat. We believe it is a mistake to ignore the state’s guidance in these matters. While we are completely confident in God’s sovereign care over us, we also understand that God’s people are not immune to disease. The guidance we are receiving is not simply about our own personal protection, but the protection of the general population, and specifically those who are most vulnerable (according to the CDC, those with heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, and older adults).

The types of responses we see among the Christian community are very interesting. There are those who are ignoring guidance, saying it is a conspiracy. Others are ignoring it, declaring that the government is overstepping its bounds. Others are panicked. There are those who declare this is separating the sheep from the goats. It is not necessary for us to think this way. Over the course of time, churches have wisely attempted to protect their members and their communities by canceling worship services due to snowstorms, tornados, and hurricanes. The church is called to worship God, to demonstrate the character of God, and to love people (among other vital purposes). It is terribly difficult for pastors and elders to say, “No church in our building.” One of our responsibilities as pastors and elders is leading people to worship God, both publicly and privately. Public meetings are canceled out of love for others, not convenience or capitulation to authority. We care about the well-being of our congregation and the well-being of our neighbors. Therefore, we have and will continue to sacrifice what is our normal rhythm of church. We are seeking to reach out to those in our care to ensure they are well cared for. We will facilitate worship the best we can through online streaming, and personal discipleship.

It is essential to note the demands of Scripture regarding the role of governing authorities. In Romans 13, a clear declaration is made of the government’s role seeking our good (Rom. 13:4). Let’s be clear, the government is not persecuting the church, as some governments in other locations and ages have. Rather, they are asking us not to meet for the physical good of the entire community. In this spirit, we will obey God by obeying our governing authorities; we will love our God by our obedience; and we will love our neighbor by doing our part to arrest the spread of disease.

So that there is no lack of clarity, all of our scheduled gatherings are postponed until we are confident that it is appropriate to meet as a group again. Please keep looking at our website, emails distributed, Facebook posts, and other forms of communication to be aware of opportunities to worship in an online format. Should you have any need arise, let us know and we will do our best to help. In the meantime, do your part by following the guidelines being presented. You and I are not the exception to the rule.

The Lord will sustain us as only He can. We will rejoice in His great care for us. Join me for a special Bible study and prayer time Wednesday night at 7:00 on any one of our streaming services. I will plan to have the Facebook stream open on a computer nearby to take in your prayer requests and questions.

Rejoicing in our always present, caring, wise God,
Pastor Rob on behalf of the Elders

Dear Cornerstone family,

As we watch the development and spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we remain steadfastly confident in God’s sovereign care over us (“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works” [Psalm 145:13]). It is essential that we do not overreact as we see safety precautions put in place to arrest the spread of the virus. Our lives from birth to death and everything in between are in the hands of our mighty God (Psalm 139:13-18; Acts 17:26-28).

Though we should not panic or feast on every article published about COVID-19, we should be careful to take reasonable steps to prevent its further spread while maintaining a sober mind. Be thoughtful about your own personal preparedness for this period of time.

As a church, we want to demonstrate care and responsibility. Our first concern is to fulfill our purposes for the Lord. We will continue to worship the Lord, for He is our life (Col. 3:4; John 4:23-24). We are concerned about caring for the physical well-being of our community and God’s church; therefore, we have some recommendations for this upcoming week:

  • If you are sick, you need to stay home. Extra thoughtfulness regarding spreading sickness is required at this time.
  • If you are physically compromised and/or over 70 years old, you should consider staying home. We want you to be well.
  • For those who do worship with us, we are strongly recommending avoiding hand shaking and even fist bumping. Let’s take extra precautions during this season.
  • To limit any unnecessary risks of spread, we are postponing for this week the following activities:
    • the fellowship after morning worship
    • AWANA
    • The Gospel Project (we will have a live online broadcast of the study)
    • Monday Evening School of the Bible.
  • We will host our Wednesday Evening Bible Study and Prayer, following the same recommendations as listed above. This is a time that we are more aware of our need for communing with the Lord through prayer, and we want to facilitate that privilege together.

All of our services are available to view live on sermonaudio.com. You can find our church in the broadcaster search at the top of the page by typing in cornerstonechurch without a space or by typing in my name.

While there will be some distance, physically, during this brief season, we stand ready to minister to your needs. Feel free to call the office or send me an email at any time. As more information is made available, we will inform you of our plans for upcoming weeks.

Sin has been plaguing people from the time of Adam and Eve. As God told Cain, sin will attempt to rule over us. Paul, in Romans 3:9-20, will teach us of sin’s controlling power, universal corruption, pervasive influence, and its terrible impact. He will unveil what is the root cause of sin—"there is no fear of God before their eyes" (3:18). He will also convey the terrifying result of man’s sinfulness—we are "held accountable to God" (3:19). Before a full unfolding of the glories of the gospel (3:21-8:39), Paul will ensure our understanding of the law’s capability (3:20). The law does not justify, but simply exposes our sin. Before we truly understand the gospel, we must be vulnerable. Whether we know it or not, we are vulnerable because we are sinners who will give an account to God. The good news is that Jesus Christ has died as a satisfying atonement for sin, and He was raised to declare righteous all who repent and believe the gospel! Join us this Sunday as we continue our study of the book of Romans.

God is righteous, faithful, and true to His promises! The unrighteousness, unfaithfulness, and false notions of man will never annul God's faithful fulfillment of what He has promised. While the Jews have been greatly blessed to have been in possession of God's abundant promises, they needed to embrace these promises through faith, resulting in being truly circumcised. Failing to truly trust God and be transformed by Him results in being under His righteous judgment. In the same way, being a regular participant at a gospel-preaching church does not guarantee a participant's salvation. Yes, there is an advantage to being under the teaching of the gospel, but the guarantee of blessing comes through repentance of sin and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Join us this Sunday as we continue our study of the book of Romans.
