Sunday Review 08.13.17

In case you weren't able to be with us for our time together yesterday, here's what you missed:

Worship Gatherings

  • Pastor Rob finished our study through the fruit of the Spirit with a focus on self-control. We saw that God warns against a lack of self-control (Prov. 25:28), and that He directs us to fight against our passions (1 Pet. 2:11). But we also saw that as we grow in our surrender to the Holy Spirit, He will increase the display of His character in our lives (2 Pet. 1:3-13). Ultimately, self-control is a result of Spirit-control.

The Gospel Project

  • We looked at the conquest of the city of Jericho as an instance of God achieving victory through the faithful obedience of His people, no matter how unusual His commands might seem. We saw that God had promised the people victory over His enemies (Josh. 6:1-5), and that they prepared for victory and obeyed (Josh. 6:15-21). But even in the midst of this conquest, we saw that God delivered a remnant from among His enemies: Rahab and her family (Josh. 6:22-25). Not only was her life spared, but she was graciously elevated to the place of inclusion in the genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matt. 1:5), the ultimate obedient servant through whom God's greatest victory was won.
